11 Budget-Friendly Tips for a Cozy Home

1. Purge and Declutter

For many of us, we don’t feel as happy in our homes because they’re filled with so much clutter. Having too much stuff can lead to stress. And even a messy kitchen can cause you to pack on the pounds by snacking more!

The first step to making your house feel cozier is to purge unnecessary items and declutter all of the rooms.

A simple way to do this without feeling tempted to keep everything insight is to ask yourself this question as you go through your rooms, “If I were moving, do I have to have this item?” If the answer is no, toss it or give it away.

2. Add a Curtain Wall

Here’s a simple trick for adding instant warmth to a room – try hanging a curtain on one of the longest walls.

A curtain with a bold print will add visual interest and make space feel cozier. Plus it takes a fraction of the time to decorate compared to painting and offers so many more options!.

3. Hang Pictures That Make You Happy

Are your walls covered with photos of family and friends? Does seeing these on a daily basis make you happy?

If so, then great. Keep them.

If not, consider replacing photos of people with pictures of things that make you happy. Do you like to travel? Add photos of your favorite spots. Are you an artist? Hang photo prints (or the real thing) through your house. Love cars or trains? Swap out some of your family pics for a classic roadster or freight train.

Be creative and watch how a simple change of imagery can give your house a more cozy feel.

4. Get a Massage Recliner or Chair

How would you like to instantly relax as soon as you get home from a hard day at work? You can do this if you had a massage recliner or chair.

These days, massage recliners are quite affordable and don’t cost that much more than a standard chair. That is if you know how to find a high-quality cheap one.

If you want a room to feel more inviting and comfortable, consider investing in a massage chair. I have a complete guide to finding the cheapest massage chair for your home to help you get started.

5. Invest in Quality Pillows

Do you still only have the cheap pillows that came with your couch? If so, now is the time to replace them.

A good set of high-quality plush pillows can easily transform your couch into a more relaxing space. Try to get at least two big square pillows to use for every day relaxing and then two smaller ones to set up as decore before guests come over.

This same advice can be used for your bed too. Having a high-quality pillow to support you while sleeping is crucial for preventing neck and back pain. [1]

6. Fresh Flowers

Nothing brightens up a room more than fresh cut flowers.

If you can afford to rotate a luxurious bouquet every other week, then, by all means, do it. However, even displaying just one or two flowers in a small vase can make a room feel more inviting.

7. Light a Fire

Do you have a fireplace? Do you ever use it?

If not, make this the year you open the chimney flue and feed it with logs. A crackling fire provides instant coziness.

Don’t have a fireplace? Or don’t want to deal with the soot?

Then, consider getting a portable electric fireplace. These small fake fireplaces look really nice and have very realistic looking flames. My guide on the best electric fireplace heater shows you all of the top (and cheap) options available for the home.

8. Memory Foam Mattress Pad

Is your bed uncomfortable and keeping you awake at night?

A cheap way to fix this without investing in an expensive mattress is to use a memory foam topper. These mattress pads come in a variety of thicknesses (2-4 inches) and can easily revitalize your old mattress and make it feel like new again.

My favorite cheap memory foam mattress topper is also infused with gel to keep it cool at night. Others even have a lavender scent to induce a good night’s rest.

9. Add Seating to the Bedroom

Your bedroom doesn’t just have to be a space for sleeping. It can also become one of your favorite nooks to hang out.

A simple way to make your bedroom cozier to be in is by adding a comfy chair. You don’t have to spend a crazy amount of money on one either. There are often many affordable options available at thrift stores that people skip over because a chair may not match their existing living room furniture.

Since you’re putting the chair in a bedroom, it’s not as hard to find one that matches your bedspread.

10. Hang White Lights

One of the beauties of the Christmas season is being engulfed with twinkling lights everywhere you go. However, the joy of Christmas lights doesn’t have to stop after the holidays are over.

Hanging white lights in the bathroom, bedroom, or basement is a cheap and easy way to add warmth and glow to the room. You don’t have to go overboard either. A short strand or two of lights goes a long way, especially if they’re hung around the outside of a mirror!

11. Rain Shower Head
